Juneau, AK (KINY) - A bicycle theft escalated to a shooting before dawn in Juneau. No one was hurt in the incident.
Juneau Police reported through an information release that a citizen in the neighborhood near Blackerby Street heard the squall of tires spinning followed by three gunshots. A second caller then reported to police that they also heard the engine of the vehicle, as well as the gunshots. A third call came in while officers were en route, where a 42-year-old man said that he had been inside his white Oldsmobile van when the bike on the back was being pulled from the rack.
The man confronted the thief, who responded with a simple statement, "I am taking this bike."
An argument erupted and the thief tried to flee on the bike. The owner pursued in another vehicle he owned, a red GMC truck, yelling at him along Blackerby Street. The suspect then pulled a handgun out of a backpack he was wearing and fired three shots into the passenger-side door. The victim was able to duck away from the shots and fled the scene to avoid gunfire. A few minutes later, the victim returned to his van and called 9-1-1.
The suspect had fled the Twin Lakes area and headed towards the valley area on the bicycle. He was quickly detained by an officer near Craig Street. The handgun was recovered from the suspect.
John E. Gregory, who is 26-years-old and of Juneau, now faces charges of Robbery in the 1st degree - A felony, Assault in the 3rd degree - C felony, Theft in the 4th degree - B misdemeanor, Misconduct Involving Weapons in the 2nd degree - B felony, Misconduct Involving Weapons in the 3rd degree - C felony and Misconduct Involving Weapons in the 5th degree – B misdemeanor.
He was sent to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center and held without bail.
During the investigation, through traffic was closed around the area of Glacier Highway and Blackerby and were not re-opened until just before 9 am.
