Ketchikan, Alaska (KINY) - A child is in good condition after jumping from the score clock of Gateway Recreation Center in Ketchikan.
According to a press release from the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, on Wednesday around noon a 12-year-old female and her caregiver came to the Gateway Recreation Center to participate in various drop-in activities. At 2:44 p.m., staff was alerted that the female had climbed over the railing on the second floor track, sat on the score clock, and jumped to the first floor of the gymnasium.
At 2:45 p.m., staff called 911 and requested medical assistance. Parks and Recreation staff provided initial care until the EMTs arrived, at which point the child was transported to the hospital. The child was conscious upon arrival at the hospital. The caregiver contacted the child’s parent and met the child at the hospital.
This is the first incident of this nature that has occurred at the Gateway Recreation Center since it opened 22 years ago. Staff plans to meet with the caregiver agency to review and assess the incident.
