Seward, Alaska (KINY) Governor Bill Walker signed Senate Bill 92 that is designed to address the problem of derelict boats in the community.

Walker signed the legislation sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Peter Micciche and Rep. Paul Seaton at the Alaska Association of Harbormasters Conference.  The bill establishes the Derelict Vessel Prevention Program Fund.

Currently, there are 200 derelict vessels documented around Alaska.  The bill will create a database of derelict vessels, and an advisory committee to help educate the public with a community outreach program.   State officials said the goal is to deter owners from abandoning boats in the water or on land without permission.
