Alaska Senate opens business, State of State address announced

Juneau Sen. Jesse Kiehl speaks to the body on Tuesday.

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Alaska Senate opened the 2nd session of the 31st Legislature with all 20 members present – including newly-appointed Sen. Joshua Revak.

Senator Revak fills the seat of the late Sen. Chris Birch, who passed away last year.

Senate Minority Leader Tom Begich made an emotional speech on the passing of Birch during special orders.

"I felt a warmth from him," Sen. Begich said of his friend and colleague.

During floor discussion, it was revealed that the State of the State address will be held Monday, Jan. 27, with a joint session of the House and Senate.

A total of 28 pre-filed bills was read through and disseminated to various Senate committees.
