School Board honors Yerkes

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - One of the more experienced administrators in Juneau Schools accepted a top education award Tuesday.

The board honored Molly Yerkes, principal at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School, who was named Principal of the Year for Region V.

Professionalism, creativity and dedication to her students were some of the descriptions of Yerkes from the staff member who nominated her for the award.

Yerkes has spent over 15 years as a school administrator with over 10 years at DZ Middle School.

Yerkes said she believes in educational equity because it opens doors to every student.  She said the only reason she received the award was because of her great staff at DZ Middle School and due to the support she receives from the school board.

Yerkes said grace, patience, and flexibility will help the schools deal with the pandemic.

She offered this advice to her colleagues, "Hit the ground running and try to do things that make sense for families."
