Fire on Edwin Pl. on Sunday night, no serious injuries reported

Capital City Fire Rescue responded to the fire Sunday evening.

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - There was a structure fire on the 1000 block of Edwin Place in Juneau on Sunday night at around 10:30. Responders arrived at a second-floor wooden deck ablaze on a two-story duplex.

Capital City Fire Rescue reports that there were no trapped occupants and that the fire was quickly extinguished.

An investigation into the cause shows that it was an accident, after discarded smoking materials were put into soil in a plastic pot. The smolder eventually melted the pot and allowed the flame to catch onto the wooden siding. No injuries requiring medical attention were reported.

CCFR says the damage is estimated at $20,000.

The firefighting department would like to remind Juneau residents to use extreme caution when using soil as an ashtray. They added that the best option is a metal container filled with water.
