Sitka turns down mask mandate

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) - Public comment was mostly split and the Sitka Assembly was mostly split Tuesday when they voted 4-3 to vote down a mask mandate for public places in the Borough.

Supporters of the mask argued they would help protect the community from more cases of COVID-19.

Opponents questioned the health benefits of the mask mandate.  Others complained about the government telling them what to do.

The assembly took over an hour of public comment before making the decision.

Sitka has had 13 resident and six non-resident cases since the pandemic began.  They currently have no active cases.
