Southeast Conference weighs in on UAS merger proposal

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Southeast Conference released a resolution on Tuesday opposing the proposed merge of the University of Alaska Southeast into another UA university.

The Southeast Conference Board of Directors emphasized in the resolution that the University of Alaska Southeast is an economic driver within the region and is a resource that Southeast cannot afford to lose.

"UAS is vital to regional education and provides a skilled, highly trained, workforce for regional businesses," a press release stated. "The Southeast Conference Board sees little room to achieve major savings from such a merger."

Southeast Conference is asking the Board of Regents to consider placing all rural community campuses under UAS administrative leadership in order to "achieve cost savings, build academic and workforce program alignment, and expand education access for students on more remote campuses."
