Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Glacier Swim Club put in a strong showing in the 2022 Alaska Senior Championship meet at Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe High School pool over the weekend, with the girls placing first among 10 teams statewide and the boys second among 12.

“It was a very successful weekend,” GSC head assistant coach Robby Jarvill said. “PJ Foy won all his races and broke some GSC records. He was pretty dominant. Emma Fellman had some really good swims. Samantha Schwarting had some outstanding swims. More than anything, just for them, getting their own goals and making qualifying times for the higher level meets that they have been training for is very successful, more so than winning a state title at a state meet in Alaska. Them qualifying for meets in the lower 48 is a much higher goal in their minds which is wonderful. Getting to that Senior Sectional level and Futures, another level above that. They had breakout swims, they worked really hard. And we are just scratching the surface of what PJ can do, he’s an amazing young man.”

Foy won all six of his individual events and was part of three winning relays spread among Tytan Frawley, Harrison Holt, Chris Degener and Sven Rasmussen. Samantha Schwarting won two individual events, Emma Fellman one and Holt one.

The GSC also won the points per swimmer award (63) and the highest percentage of best times (58%).

GSC swimmers were Parker Boman (age 14), Degener (16), Emily Delgado (15), Foy (16), Fellman (15), Frawley (17), Holt (17), Amy Liddle (12), Nancy Liddle (18), Valerie Peimann (13), Olivia Mills (16), Dannan Mills (13), Anita Morrison (16), Rasmussen (16), Racific Ricke (14), Kate Schwarting (13) and S. Schwarting (15).

The meet had no age groups, if a qualifying time was met by a swimmer they could compete. An example would be Foy winning the 100 fly with former Thunder Mountain swimmer Kenny Fox (age 25) placing second.

“So we had 12, 13, 14 year olds competing against 18 year olds,” Jarvill said. “It was a big step up for some younger swimmers who were used to swimming with their age group. They were double swimming and making finals and consolation finals and scoring points for the team and were a huge part of the team’s success. It was great to see the next generation.”

Olympic gold medalist, and Seward Tsunami Swim Club member, Lydia Jacoby competed and also spoke to Sitka High School students at the Sitka Performing Arts Center. She also held a swim clinic for the Baranof Barracudas Swim Club.

“It is great to see her coming and competing in these state meets and being part of Alaska swimming,” Jarvill said. “She’s doing great things. A lot of these kids have known Lydia her whole life, been at swim meets with her for years and years. It’s pretty amazing that she can be humble and part of Alaska swimming. It would have been easy for her to move on and continue her life but she is definitely giving back to Alaska.”
