Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau runners and walkers celebrated the life of Justin Fantasia in the first annual Justin Fantasia Memorial Run 4 the Rock at Pioneer Road on Saturday.

Steve Ricci was the top male finisher in the 10K race with a time of 43 minutes and four seconds and Kseniia Yarova the top female, and fourth overall, in 47:05. Arnold Liebelt was top 5K male in 30:46 and Lauren Heide the top female and second overall in 32:43.

First run in 2019 as the Eldred Rock Lighthouse Run 4 the Rock Foghorn Race, it was renamed to honor Justin Fantasia, 43, who passed on June 20th from glioblastoma brain cancer. He had a BS in environmental biology from UMass Amherst, was a National Outdoor Leadership School instructor, led NOLS youth trips, was a wilderness guide, worked with AmeriCorps, worked with at-risk youth on projects on public lands, led students in construction of 12 affordable homes in Juneau, served as construction manager for Juneau House Build Partnership, was on the Southeast Alaska Building Industry Association board, was a governor appointee to the Serve Alaska Commission, was a volunteer board member on the Eldred Rock Lighthouse Preservation Association, and was a rock and ice climber, a skier and hockey player, an alpine adventurer, assistant professor of construction technology at the University of Alaska Southeast and a beloved member of the Juneau community.

“Many in Southeast knew Justin and appreciated his intelligence, humor, athleticism, work ethic, kindness, and energy,” said Sue York, the race director and executive director of the Eldred Rock Lighthouse Preservation Association. “The Eldred Rock Lighthouse knew him as a servant…a talented giver…a knowledgeable and connected philanthropist…a part of something historic. Justin was instrumental on the board of directors of this small but passionate nonprofit, conducting joint inspections with the U.S. Coast Guard, measuring, supplying, and planning. His attention and time will be missed greatly. The Run 4 the Rock annual Foghorn race has been renamed as a memorial to his legacy and we thank all 30 runners and friends that came out to the Pioneer Road to show their support and remember Justin.”

Eldred Rock Lighthouse is the oldest original lighthouse in the state and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. It is located 17 miles south of Haines.
