Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau’s Post 25 American Legion baseball team opened the Alaska state championships at Anchorage’s Mulcahy Stadium with a 3-0 win over Chugiak.
Juneau pitchers Porter Nelson, Kai Schmidt, Garrison Luben and Isaiah Nelson allowed just two hits in the game, struck out seven and walked eight. Schmidt pitched 3.2 innings, Luben 2.1 innings and I. Nelson picked up the save after working around a base hit and walk in the seventh inning.
“It is very important to have lots of pitchers,” Juneau co-coach Joe Tompkins said. “The key to these type of tournaments is pitching. You play a lot of games in a short period of time and need quality pitchers.”
Juneau also has quality batters.
Schmidt earned a one-out walk in the fourth and advanced on a two-out single by P. Nelson and scored on an error in the outfield.
According to Post 25 they scored their final two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Schmidt was hit by a pitch, advanced on a P. Nelson bunt and scored on an error at third base. I. Nelson moved P. Nelson along on a fielder’s choice and Gavin Millard brought him home.
Millard and Rawson had one RBI apiece. McCormick and P. Nelson had two hits, Ludeman, I. Nelson and Millard one apiece. Schmidt scored two runs and P. Nelson one run. McCormick, Oliver Mendoza, Luben and Schmidt earned one walk each.
